Name: Nicole Rae

Career/Job: Social Media Manager, Golf Digest

First, thank you so much for answering some questions with us! To start off, when did you start playing golf and was it love at first swing?

I started playing golf when I was four years old. My family and I were having brunch on Mother’s Day at our country club and I saw a group of golfers on the 18th hole. I asked me dad to take me out to play but he said no. I begged him all day long until he finally took me out later that day to the range! It’s been a part of my life ever since.

We can’t believe he said no! That’s so funny. So who really got you into golf then?

My dad first got me into golf, but my grandfather was a golf nut and really sparked my passion. He absolutely loved to play- his entire garage was filled with egg cartons of golf balls he found on the course!

Like a true golfer, always bringing home found golf balls! You went to the University of Iowa and played on a golf scholarship (impressive), how was it being a Hawkeye?

Being a Hawkeye was an incredible experience. When I was first looking at schools, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to play in college. After I visited Iowa and absolutely fell in love. I talked to the coach about walking on and I was lucky enough to get a spot on her team. I worked as hard as I could on the course and in school until I was offered a scholarship. The most special part about being a Hawkeye is how widespread the community is.

No matter where you go in the country, if you’re wearing Iowa gear someone will yell “go hawks”!

Speaking from experience, that’s totally true! You just recently made a move to NYC and started working with Golf Digest. How exciting! Can you tell us a little about what you are doing there?

I’m the social media manager for Golf Digest. I post from and monitor the Golf Digest Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages and work with our video teams to create fun social content. I absolutely love it! The group of people I work with is so enjoyable to be around and New York City is INCREDIBLE!

So you’re behind it all! Always great to put a face with a large account like that. Love it! Because of your huge involvement in the golf world, it someone asks you why you love the game of golf, what would you tell them?

Golf is the one sport that actually brings people together. Whether you’re playing with friends or a group of strangers, everyone is encouraging and supportive which is amazing! I also love that no matter your age, you can play the game in some capacity.

The golf community has definitely been wonderful to be a part of. Well now that you’ve been all over and work in the industry and played in college, what is your favorite course you have played?

Kapalua! All golf in Hawaii is pretty fantastic, but Kapalua is spectacular. The golf course is in perfect condition and the views are GORGEOUS! Plus it’s always fun to play where the pros play!

It’s a stunning golf course! And agreed, we love playing where the PGA and LPGA tournaments are held. When you were competing did you have any superstitions for before you play a round of tournament golf?

I always make three 3-foot putts in a row before heading to the first tee. During competitions if I was wearing a jacket I would always keep it on until I made a bogey. If I was playing well I didn’t like to change anything to keep my good mojo going!

Interesting, never heard the jacket one before! Okay….now some off-topic questions! Let’s get to know you a little more. If you could have one super power what would it be and why?

Mind reading! I would love to know what people are actually thinking. I love to help people in need and have a pretty good intuition, so I can usually sense when people are feeling sad or upset.

Being able to read minds would make it that much easier to help people when they need it.

Totally different! That’s awesome, and you would use it for such a great reason! Okay, we know that golf can’t be your ENTIRE life. What are your hobbies besides golf?

I like to work out, try new restaurants, travel, and explore! Being a new resident of New York City, it’s been so much fun to walk all over the city and discover new places!

Sounds like our lives. Our days usually revolve around finding the next place we’re going to eat (haha). What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

A few weeks after I moved to New York City, I was walking on the street outside my apartment. I ran right into a guy I went to high school with who was randomly in the area to get dinner! New York City has millions of people but I run into someone I know, how crazy?!

That is crazy! The world is big but small at the same time. We loved watching Solheim Cup walk out songs so if golf had a walk out song, what would yours be?

Ready For It by T-Swift

Cannot get enough of Taylor Swift. With all of that traveling, restaurant finding and exploring, what is your guilty pleasure?

Chocolate!!! I have a huge sweet tooth so anything chocolate is my weakness.

Armana has a huge sweet tooth, so she gets it! So it’s the end of the day, you’re driving home and you turn on Apple Music. Who are you going to play?

I wouldn’t say I have one favorite. I like all types of music, so I enjoy a lot of different artists!

Fair. There’s almost too many to choose from nowadays. Thank you so much Nicole for answering some questions! We loved speaking with you!

Thank you to Nicole for interviewing with Graceful Golfer! It’s awesome to get to know someone behind the social media scenes! If you have any questions that you’d like for us to ask future interviewees or even have a request for an interviewee, comment below and let us know!
