4 Ways to Improve Your Swing Tempo

Posted: February 13, 2018 by Anna DePalma

We can not express enough how important your tempo is with your swing. You can have an amazing swing with an awful tempo and you will not hit the ball that way you want. On the other hand, you could be a beginning golfer and have a great swing tempo and you will definitely make contact with the ball. In this post we are going to give you a few tips to try to keep your tempo up to par. See what we did there? Alright, let’s get started.

4 Things to Try to Improve Your Swing Tempo

  1. Find a tigger word or phrase/name that works best for you. For example, Anna says “slow” right before she hits the ball. You could try saying your name like Anna (backswing) De (pause at the top) Palma (down and follow through). You could even use count, 1-2-3. This helps a lot especially when you are under pressure because all you are thinking is the trigger word or phrase/Name.
  2. Practice swinging and pausing at the top. While on the range working on your swing over exaggerate a pause, it will help get your swing and body working together. ThinkΒ Hideki Matsuyama! He does this amazingly, and he does it in his swing on the course. Now, you don’t have to do that but it’s a great practice tool.
  3. Don’t try to kill the ball!

The key to keeping a good tempo is swigging no more than 60-70%.

There is no need to swing at 100%, ever. You want to make good contact with the ball so you are able to compress it. The easiest way to do Β that consistently is to swing with more control. To figure out what percentage you are most comfortable at try swinging at 25% speed, then 50%, then 75% and lastly at 100%. Which one felt the best?

  4. Use a training aid that is supposed to help with swing tempo. You name, we’ve probably tried it! Don’t be afraid to try different training aids and see if something works for you. We have used the Swing Click aid below and Armana still uses an app on her phone that has swing tempo ratios.

Try these swing tempo tips out and let us know how they worked, we would also love to hear which one worked best for you! Remember TEMPO-TEMPO-TEMPO!
